CASE STUDY

Client:  Here to There Productions

Production:  The Ladykillers by Graham Linehan

Venue:  The Courtyard Theatre, Hereford

Sector:  Theatre & Productions

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Seedbed Studio was commissioned by Here to There Productions to design and construct a fully functioning revolving set for their stage production of The Ladykillers. Following early discussions with the director, it became clear that the design needed to deliver both technical complexity and visual storytelling impact, while ensuring smooth scene transitions within the constraints of a live performance environment.

THE DESIGN CHALLENGE

The central challenge was to create a full-sized revolving structure with an integrated staircase and upper mezzanine, capable of supporting multiple scenes and locations within a single rotating unit.

The revolve required an off-centre pivot point, ensuring the interior of the house remained centre stage for the audience, while still being able to rotate smoothly into position for the final scene - revealing a railway tunnel.

In addition, the design needed to accommodate:

  • A functional roof space used during a climactic fight scene that transitioned seamlessly from the bedroom to the rooftop.

  • Concealed entrances and trap doors for actors to move unseen between spaces beneath the mezzanine.

  • A stable and quiet rotation mechanism, critical for maintaining audience immersion during live performance.

OUR SOLUTION

Seedbed Studio worked closely with the director and production team to develop detailed CAD models and construction drawings, ensuring that every mechanical and visual element worked harmoniously on stage.

The revolve was engineered to balance strength, safety and smooth motion, using a reinforced substructure capable of supporting both the actors and the set’s upper level. The off-centre pivot was precisely aligned to maintain visual symmetry while achieving the required movement.

We incorporated hidden doors, trap mechanisms and integrated actor spaces beneath the mezzanine, allowing for seamless entrances, exits and unseen transitions during key moments of the production.

Once the design was approved, our team handled the full construction, installation and de-rig at The Courtyard Theatre, coordinating with stage management and technical crew to ensure efficient assembly and flawless performance throughout the run.
